TVMDL experts contribute to findings that strengthen diagnosis of E. coli pneumonia in dogs
Two Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, TVMDL, pathologists and one pathology resident contributed to a newly published study examining six cases of a rare and rapidly fatal form of E. coli-associated pneumonia in dogs.
Josué Díaz-Delgado, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVP, Erin Edwards, DVM, MS, DACVP, and Veterinary Resident, Margaret Odom, DVM, are co-authors of a recently published study examining a case series of pneumonia associated with extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli, or ExPEC.
In addition to bacterial culture, the authors used two specialized testing methods, immunohistochemistry, IHC, and fluorescence in situ hybridization, FISH, to identify and locate E-coli. Combining these diagnostic methods provided visual evidence of the bacteria within the affected tissue, revealing important details that culture alone could not show.
During the study, they discovered E. coli with an unusual elongated appearance, known as filamentation. This bacterial adaptation had not previously been reported in canine ExPEC pneumonia and could be mistaken for other Gram-negative bacteria based on appearance alone.
The findings highlight the value of integrating complementary testing methods.
Through this collaborative work, Díaz-Delgado, Edwards, and Odom are helping strengthen the diagnostic picture of a severe canine disease while contributing knowledge that can help the veterinary community interpret challenging cases with greater confidence.
