Town of Richland Hosts First ‘Cultural Cake Walk’

Head up to northern Oswego County for the inaugural ‘Cultural Cake Walk” in and around the town of Richland and village of Pulaski. From noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, enjoy the sweet taste of summer with various treats along the route.

“We’re excited to launch this new food challenge after the success we’ve had with the wing, chili and mac ‘n cheese contests during the Salmon River Winter Festival,” said event coordinator Shawn Doyle. “This time, we’re focusing on the sweet, rather than the savory. We’re also highlighting cultural assets and community centers that don’t always get a lot of attention.

“Summer is a great time for people to come up here to northern Oswego County and see what beautiful country it is, and all the places they can explore,” he added.

As with the winter contests, there is no fixed start or stop point. People can choose how to make their way around using the map and list of participants with addresses on the back of each ballot.

Ballots are $10 each and can be purchased at all participating sites beginning Monday, Aug. 10 and continuing through the day of the cake walk.

Proceeds from ballot sales will be split between each participating location:

• Fernwood Community Center, 249-55 Co. Rte. 41A, Pulaski
• “Grave Geeks” Gravestone Cleaning at Richland Cemetery, 2252 Co. Rte. 22, Pulaski
• “Play it Forward” Scholarship at Daisy Belle Country Flowers, 118 Ivens Rd., Pulaski
• Pulaski Historical Society, 3428 Maple Ave., Pulaski
• Pulaski Masonic Temple, 28 Broad St., Pulaski
• Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County, Inc., 15 Stewart St., Richland
• Salmon River Fine Arts Center, 4848 Jefferson St., Pulaski
• Westdale/Selkirk Depot, 718 Co. Rte. 5, Pulaski
• Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Ontario Chapter and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Syracuse Chapter at Half-Shire Historical Society, 1100 Co. Rte. 48, Richland

Tasting portions are one cookie, scoop of ice cream, slice of cake or pie, etc. Each location will also provide hot and cold tea, coffee and lemonade, along with historical tours and membership information about their site.

The Half-Shire Historical Society hosts an “after gathering” at 5 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and live music by Rick Lee.
